Before optical trackers, checking main rotor blade track meant a technician holding a marked flag or grease stick out near the rotor disc while it turned, reading which blade struck the flag highest, then interpreting a strobe-lit reflective tape pattern from the ground. It worked, but it depended entirely on the observer's position, lighting, and judgment — three variables that make repeatability difficult, and make night operations effectively impossible. FasTrak replaces that entire manual process with an optical sensor that measures blade position directly.
How FasTrak Actually Works
FasTrak is mounted on the fuselage, oriented upward into the rotor disc, and views each blade through a narrow, roughly ten-degree window as it passes overhead. The measurement principle is simple but precise: a high-flying blade stays in that field of view longer than a low-flying blade. FasTrak times exactly how long each blade is visible, converts that timing difference into a track measurement, and reports it automatically — no observer, no flag, no interpretation.
What It Replaces
- The flag/grease-stick method — a technician physically marking blade position by hand, at close range to a turning rotor
- Ground-based strobe tracking — reading a reflective pattern lit by a strobe timed to rotor RPM, which depends on ambient light and viewing angle
- Manual lead/lag estimation — FasTrak reports lead/lag automatically alongside track, rather than requiring a separate observation
The result isn't just faster — it's measurably more consistent, because the same optical sensor takes the same measurement the same way every time, regardless of who's running the job or what the ambient lighting looks like. It also works at night, which the flag and ground-strobe methods effectively cannot.

Track and balance data from FasTrak feeds straight into the same session as your vibration readings, so a single flight produces both track and balance numbers together instead of two separate passes.
Installation
Setup uses an aircraft-specific mounting bracket and the paired software configuration for that airframe — not a universal, one-size-fits-all install. Getting the right bracket and configuration for your specific aircraft type is the part worth getting right the first time, since a misaligned sensor produces track data as unreliable as the flag method it's replacing.
