Onboard HUMS vs. Portable Analyzers: What's the Difference?

"HUMS" and "portable analyzer" both get used loosely to describe rotor track & balance and vibration equipment, but they're two different categories of hardware solving two different problems. If you're trying to work out whether your fleet needs a Carry-On VXP, an onboard Zing™ HUMS VXP, or both, this is the distinction that actually matters.

Portable Analyzers: Test-Flight Tools

Portable analyzers — the 8500C Plus and Carry-On VXP — are units a technician carries out to the aircraft, connects to temporary sensors, runs a balance or vibration-survey flight with, and then disconnects and takes back to the shop. They're general-purpose: the same unit balances main rotors on one aircraft in the morning and runs a tail rotor track job on a different aircraft that afternoon. Nothing stays installed on the airframe between sessions.

Onboard HUMS: Permanently Installed, Always Collecting

Onboard HUMS — Honeywell's Zing™ HUMS VXP and EVXP, along with the MSPU family (MSPU 1209, MSPU 1134/1239) and the newer RECON™ platform — is hardware that lives on the aircraft permanently. The Acquisition Unit wires into hardwired vibration and tachometer sensors throughout the drivetrain and collects data on every flight automatically, with no technician standing by and no dedicated test flight required. At the end of a flight, a summary report is already generated; a lightweight download (about 30 seconds) pulls the full dataset for review.

Because it's watching continuously instead of during one snapshot flight, onboard HUMS catches things a periodic portable check can miss between visits — trend shifts in gear-mesh amplitude, a bearing signature that's just starting to develop, a damper losing effectiveness. One documented case: a Zing HUMS VXP/EVXP installation caught a cracked support structure for a tail rotor drive shaft before it became a catastrophic failure — the kind of finding a monthly or quarterly portable check could easily land between.

They're Not Competing — Most Fleets Use Both

Onboard HUMS doesn't replace the need for a portable analyzer on the ramp — it replaces some of the dedicated test flights a portable-only shop would otherwise fly. A rotor that HUMS flags as trending out of balance still gets corrected with a portable unit and FasTrak or Strobex blade tracking on the next maintenance visit. Onboard HUMS tells you when and what; the portable analyzer is still how the correction actually gets made.
