Start Cart vs. Portable GPU: Why Operators Are Switching

For decades, the default way to give a turbine engine a hand starting was a diesel or gasoline start cart — a wheeled generator towed out to the aircraft, plugged in, run up, and towed back. It works, but it comes with a fixed cost every time: fuel, an operator, a tow vehicle, hangar floor space, and a maintenance schedule of its own. Over the past decade, a growing share of that job has shifted to battery-based portable ground power units (GPUs) — lightweight, single-person, plug-and-start devices like the StartStick GPU. The Core Difference

A start cart is a small power plant: an engine, an alternator, fuel storage, and enough mass to stay stable while towed. A portable GPU is a battery pack with a case and a connector — no combustion, no fuel, no engine to service. Where the Cost Actually Lives

A start cart's purchase price is only the entry cost. The real, recurring cost is everything that keeps it usable: fuel, a scheduled engine service interval, tire and battery replacement on the cart itself, and a line technician's time to fetch it, position it, and return it after every start. None of that shows up on the original invoice, but it shows up every single dispatch.

A portable GPU removes almost all of that. There's no fuel to buy or store, no engine to service, and because it weighs 10–20 lbs rather than several hundred, one person carries it directly to the aircraft instead of towing a cart across the ramp. Where Start Carts Still Make Sense

This isn't a case that carts are obsolete. A large ground power cart still delivers more sustained current than a portable unit and remains the right tool for continuous ground power — running avionics and environmental systems during extended maintenance, for example, rather than a single engine start.
