The 8500C Plus: The Workhorse
The 8500C Plus is the tool most shops reach for by default: main and tail rotor tracking/balancing, fixed-wing propeller balancing, engine vibration checks, high-speed shaft balancing, and standard trend/spectrum monitoring, all in one portable unit with an integral printer for immediate reports. It pairs with FasTrak or Strobex for optical blade tracking and is built to be usable by a trainee and a dynamics engineer alike — the interface doesn't demand deep spectrum-analysis expertise for routine balancing work.
The Carry-On VXP: When You Need More Resolution
The Carry-On VXP is built for the jobs where you need to see more in the data — a 75 kHz frequency range and 51,200-line resolution put it well above general-purpose balancing needs, into the territory of complex vibration surveys and detailed component diagnostics. Its 6-channel simultaneous acquisition and 48 vibration inputs also mean it can capture a much wider vibration survey in a single pass, rather than running multiple sequential sessions.
Which One Do You Actually Need?
- Choose the 8500C Plus if your workload is primarily rotor track & balance and routine vibration checks — the majority of day-to-day rotorcraft and fixed-wing maintenance.
- Choose the Carry-On VXP if you regularly run complex spectrum surveys, need high-resolution FFT data for diagnostic troubleshooting, or need to capture many channels simultaneously.
- Some shops run both — the 8500C Plus for daily balancing, the VXP reserved for the harder diagnostic cases that show up less often but need more resolution when they do.
